I'm talking about the No More Page 3 group who have been lobbying and fighting for the removal of bare boobs from a British newspaper known as The Sun. The Sun, it's hardly a newspaper but for lack of a better word that's what we call it, prints images of topless women on page three. The group had been fighting this and yesterday it was announced that The Sun would finally stop. However, today (the 22nd of Jan), the 'newspaper' was all like JOKES we're not, BOOBs not news forever mwa-ha-ha!
I don't really know what to think about it all but what I do think, I just wanted to get it off my chest...get it down in writing. There have been a variety of arguments both for and against it, and I am against it, but I want to look at some of the points that've been made.
My immediate reaction to page three is that it's degrading and has no place in a newspaper! And I'm right, jugs aren't news. When I'm reading about deflation, rising house prices and how the NHS is in trouble, I don't want to turn the page and see Becky 20 from Leed's airbags...It's just not something I want or need to see when reading the news. Her hooters are irrelevant and I don't need to see them.
But then I remember that Becky 20 from Leeds has given her full consent to have her chesticles printed in ink and distributed countrywide for all to ogle at (and let's be honest, do whatever else they want to do with the image). And she does earn a wage from having her gazongas on display. A wage that might feed her kids and keep the bailiffs away...let her buy bigger knockers, whatever she wants.
But is that what lovers of page three think? Are they like, oh yeah Becky 20 from Leeds has given her full consent, this was her choice? No. I'm going to assume that they don't. They probably don't think. They probably go, Ooooh boobies! Great! and then they look up and see another women in a thick polo neck jumper and think, I bet this is what her tatas look like, and then they'll imagine them. And that's how it impacts upon me. And I feel sick.
To me, page three just makes women look stupid. As meaningless sexual objects rather than the mothers, sisters, daughters, Professors , MPs and Doctors that we are/can be. According to page three, a women (and therefore me) is nothing more than a pair of fun bags. No brains just boobies. And depicting women in this way is wrong.
But then, I wonder about censorship. It's been shouted about enough that as an issue, it's worth consideration. Will banning page three hurt issues
such as breast feeding babies and raising awareness of breast cancer...I might not understand one's obsessions with whimwhams but I get how they're important. I think women should be able to breast feed wherever and whenever. It's what those milkmakers were made for. Women shouldn't be ashamed to breast feed in public. EVER. Would censoring page three impact on this?
No. I think there's a time and a place for having your goombas on display. Feeding babies? yes. Get your tits out for the lads? no.
These four issues have me going round in circles. I know page three is awful. This is something I know but I can't stop thinking about these other arguments like consent and censorship.
What do you think? I'd love to know. Any opinions or points to add/make? I am against page three. I do not agree with it. But I can't help thinking these things...Let me know in the comments below.
